When Long Island Actually Needs HVAC Help: 12 Months of Search Demand Data

Every HVAC company on Long Island thinks it knows the busy season. We wanted the actual numbers — so we pulled twelve months of Google search demand (July 2025 through June 2026) for 68 heating and cooling search terms across Suffolk and Nassau County, using Google's own Keyword Planner data. Here's what a year of real homeowner demand looks like.

The headline numbers

Across both counties, Long Islanders run roughly 18,500 heating-and-cooling searches in an average month. But the swing between the peak and the quiet season is enormous:

Two peaks stand out — and only one of them is the one everyone expects.

Finding 1: July is the panic month

July 2025 was the single biggest month of the year at 29,240 searches — more than double the March trough. No surprise on its own: the first sustained heat wave sends every under-maintained AC system on the Island to its breaking point at once.

The practical takeaway for homeowners is the inverse: the best time to deal with your AC is March or April, when demand (and installer backlogs) hit their annual low. By the time you're searching "ac not working" in a July heat wave, so are thousands of your neighbors.

Finding 2: the November emergency spike nobody talks about

We tracked emergency-intent searches ("emergency hvac", "emergency furnace repair", "24 hour ac repair" and similar) separately — and the biggest emergency month isn't in summer at all.

Emergency HVAC searches peaked in November (430), nearly matching December (390) and January (380), and running 2–4× the summer baseline (100–200). The first real cold snap is when Long Island discovers its heating systems didn't survive the off-season: boilers that won't fire, furnaces that short-cycle, no-heat calls stacking up.

August, by contrast, is the quietest emergency month of the year (100). If your heating system is over 15 years old, the data's message is blunt: test it in October, not Thanksgiving week.

Finding 3: the heat pump boom is real — and it peaks with AC season

Heat pump and ductless searches ("heat pump", "heat pump installation", "mini split", "ductless ac" and variants) totaled roughly 2,900–5,200 searches per month across the two counties — a demand cluster that barely existed on Long Island a decade ago.

The seasonal shape is revealing: the cluster's biggest months are June and July, not the dead of winter. Long Islanders shop for heat pumps when their old central AC dies and they're choosing its replacement — the moment when one system that both heats and cools, with PSEG-LI and NYSERDA incentives attached, becomes the obvious comparison.

Spring builds steadily too (April 3,120 → May 3,650 → June 3,930 in 2026), consistent with homeowners planning electrification projects ahead of summer.

What this means if you own a home here

• Replace in the shoulder seasons. March–April for cooling, September–October for heating. You'll compete with the fewest neighbors for installer attention.
• The November no-heat call is predictable — literally. It shows up in the search data every year. A fall tune-up is cheaper than a Thanksgiving emergency visit.
• If your AC is on its last legs, price a heat pump against a straight AC swap. Thousands of your neighbors are running that exact comparison — the incentives currently tilt the math further than most people expect.
